Uyghurs -- Ethnic minority in China

Timeline

Before 1949: Uyghurs and Xinjiang

Xinjiang has historically been ethnically and politically complex, with periods of Chinese control as well as resistance and short-lived independent governments.

Background

Uyghurs are a population of around 11 million to 12 million living mainly in Xinjiang, which makes up 40% of the region's population. They are actively being repressed by the Chinese government. This officially started in 2014 and expanded vastly in 2017 with a harsh security campaign that was launched by the Chinese government.

Current Status

At the moment, China faces genocidal and human rights accusations most prominently by the United States. A UN report has stated that abuses in Xinjiang may amount to crimes against humanity. However, the Chinese government strongly denies all accusations of abuse, claiming the policies promote economic growth and social stability in the region.
